BDS 4.5" Lift Kit for Jeep WJ Grand Cherokee

In 1999 Chrysler introduced the new and improved Grand Cherokee, designated as the "WJ". The WJ built on the previous ZJ with a more modern and comfortable interior, a stronger motor and improved safety systems. Like the ZJ, the WJ leaned heavily towards being a street driven family SUV and as such was quite low-slung with smallish tires. Luckily, Jeep did, however, stay true to it's off-road roots and retained a solid front axle and coils springs at all four corners which, in many people's viewpoint, makes it a more durable and capable 4x4 that is quite easily modified with a lift kit for fitment of larger tires.

Now that the WJ has been on the market for quite some time many are now finding their way into the used market and are becoming more accessible price-wise for those who wish to not only drive their kids to soccer but also go fourwheeling on Sunday too. BDS saw a need for a larger lift system and that is what they have now released in a complete 4.5" lift system that will allow fitment of 31" tires. BDS are known for their well designed and easy to install lift kits and most importantly for their No Fine Print Warranty and this 4.5" kit does not disappoint. Unlike other kits for WJ's the BDS kit will be very street friendly because it does not use any Heim joints for the control arms. With any coil sprung, multi-link suspension Jeep, there are particularly large concerns. First are weird handling traits after the lift is installed. Second is is driveline vibration. This particular WJ belongs to one of our employees and we are happy to report that there is no driveline vibration at all and the vehicle does not exhibit any weird handling traits like uncontrollable sway or "death" wobble. Off-road ability is also greatly improved just by virtue of the additional ground clearance that results from the added lift and the ability to run taller tires. Particularly noticeable is the increased departure angle and increased ground clearance at the rocker panels. Wheel travel has improved at all four corners allowing the tires to stay on the ground.

Factory front end suspension parts have been removed. The WJ is ready for the installation of BDS parts.

The control arms use long-lasting urethane, street-approved bushings, not Heim joints that are questionable in some jurisdictions.

Front lower control arms are length-adjustable, allowing them to adjust for the proper caster.

Rear shock, lift spring and extended sway bar link.

The WJ's unique trailing A-arm is retained, and a spacer is added to provide the proper geometry for the lift springs.

Front axle lower control arms, shocks, and steering damper.

Rear spring, shock and lower control arm.

Rear BDS Suspension install is complete with new coils, shocks, extended sway bar links and A-arm spacer.

All in all the owner of this WJ has been greatly impressed with the BDS lift kit that has been installed on his truck. Looks and off-road performance have been greatly improved with absolutely no sacrifice in on road manners.
